lavender and Saint Jude proudly present their new single, 'smaller hours'.
lavender are Oskar Rice and Adam Jackson; friends since school, one a DJ/producer, one in an indie band, their burgeoning friendship saw them bonding over Elliot Smith as much as J Dilla. Their debut EP garnered praise and appreciation, with lead single 'peppermint’ currently on 22 million Spotify streams. Worldwide FM and NTS were hugely supportive, as were BBC 6Music stalwart Cerys Matthews and Jack Saunders and Nels Hylton at BBC Radio 1.
lavender - "Smaller Hours is one of our favourite pieces of music we’ve ever made. Jude is someone we’ve, been fans of for a long time and collaborated with sporadically for the last 5 years, but towards the end of last year, we found a groove that really leant itself well to collaboration.
The first session for this track, the 3 of us jammed out a rough idea, a mixture of guitars and synths, which then got resampled into the bed of the track. From there the 3 of us just went back and forth adding layers and sculpting the track. It’s a bit of an audio journey that took us a good few months to really find the map for. Sonically, this world feels so fresh for us. Working with Jude brings a completely different perspective and technique to making music, which is really exciting for us.
As with most of our songs, I think we’d prefer not to be too prescriptive about what it means, or what certain lyrics pertain to. But, this track is really a conversation between all of its parts. The production, the lyrics and the song structure are all born out of, and reflective of how we communicated and what we shared with each other in the studio in Hither Green. Those elements all speak to and inform each other and the musings we find ourselves in, in the smaller hours."
Saint Jude - “Making this song was one of the most truly collaborative experiences I’ve ever had making music. Everything Oskar and Adam did would inspire me to play something, or write something, and we were constantly responding to each other’s ideas. I felt like we were all pushing each other further, and I think the result is something beyond what any of us could make on our own.
We had so many ideas and there were so many directions that this song could have gone in, and we had to carefully steer it and guide it in the direction that we felt was most true.
I feel like the arc of the song and the way the sound of it changes kind of tells the story of us making it in some kinda way.
Yeah likewise don’t really want to talk in specifics about the lyrics. But I mention being lost a lot in my verse, which is something I’ve been feeling a lot. It can be so hard to know what you want. Or your ideas of what you want can be so abstract you can get lost on your way there. These things are obviously deeply personal, but I think they are also a symptom of living through our current historical moment (not to get too deep lol).”
